In the past few weeks, we have worked on multiple photography exercises including Lightning & Focus, Point of View, and Composition.
Lighting focused on the shadows / light of the photos, angling the camera and using different types of light (hard, soft, natural, and more) to create the photos, while Focus focused on focusing in on one object (ie. blurring the foreground/background).
POV, or Point of View, dictates what and who is looking and at what. For example, a photo from high up above can be called a bird-shot view, like it was seen by a bird. Other methods can be used to intimidate, or give the viewer power over the subject(s).
Composition used the setup and objects in an image to draw the eye in to the focal point This included rule of 3rds, leading lines, and many more. This focused not on the angle or lighting, but on the actual photo itself and the subjects within it.
Lighting & Focus Exercise:
Top left: Foreground is in focus (everything else is blurry)
Top center: Middle is in focus (everything else is blurry)
Top right: Background is in focus (everything else is blurry)
Bottom left: Everything is in focus
PoV Exercise:
Top left: Eye-To-Eye
Top center: Worm's Eye View (below)
Top right: Bird's Eye View (above)
Bottom left: Dutch Angel (tilt)
Bottom center: Zooming - Extreme Close Up
Bottom right: Zooming - Extreme Distance
Compositional Exercise:
Top left & Middle: Leading Lines
Top right: Framing
Middle left: Balanced Subjects
Middle middle: Broken Pattern
Middle right: rule of 3rds
Bottom left: simplicity
Exercise Reflection / Review
Favorite & Least Favorite Image(s)
My favorite image is the top left in the second photo group (Bird's Eye View). I liked the almost filter-y effect it had due to the focus & lighting.
My least favorite is the bottom image in the first group (Everything in Focus) since it did not highlight as much & overall was a boring/plain image.
Using in Portfolio
For use in my portfolio, Eye-to-Eye image as one of my different message images, with the message "Temptation". Beyond this, I am not planning on adding any of the other images from this blog post into my final portfolio.
Need for Final Portfolio
Some things that I still need for my final are the images (five with the same message, four with different ones). The message I am pursuing is "Broken", and the other messages I plan on creating via the images I take and choose as my favorite ones to represent their theme.
Second Opinion
For here, I am gaining a second opinion via a casual critical friends advice. Luca was the person I interviewed and here is the feedback I gained from it.
Favorites
Luca's favorites included the two purple flowers focusing on focus, and the top-down (worm's eye view) on account of the angling and appreciation for the subject.
Noticed
Luca noticed the subjects and mood of many images, but specifically commented on the close-up looking like eggs and the color contrast.
